one big ship

Image
Yeah I know the Queen Mary 2 was just here in Long Beach not so long ago and yes I know it is basically the largest passenger ship ever but seeing it slip under the Golden Gate Bridge gives one a good sense of scale - especially for us folks who grew up in the Bay Area. Greetings from the Bay Area

Image
Fog and moss are the non family things I miss most about winters up North. As a xmas present of sorts, my friend Corey offered me a ride up to the Bay Area late Friday night. So here I am at moms wifi enabled house on a laptop left here by one of her Korean exchange students. Everything is written in Korean as one might imagine but some of the slightly x-rated anime is a little odd and needs no translation. Not my thing but whatever toots his horn, sails his boat, milks his cow if you know what I mean. nudge nudge. Anyhow I'm longer going nuts in my apartment this week watching bad talk shows and cleaning my refrigerator. Did have a fun time at Ikea last week though so all wasn't lost. Now off to my brother's house to get drunk off two beers and fall asleep on his couch.

Actual conversation I had leaving work yesterday: Bill: Oh wow there's clouds out. Me: It is December. You know winter and all. Yes, I've been rubbing this in to my friends up North. 5-day forecast for the Bay Area Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat T-storms Rain Chance of Rain Chance of Rain Partly Cloudy 61° | 52° 60° | 52° 59° | 52° 60° | 51° 59° | 50° 5-day forecast for Los Angeles Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Partly Cloudy Partly Cloudy Partly Cloudy Partly Cloudy Clear 78° | 54° 76° | 53° 68° | 53° 72° | 52° 76° | 51°

Can we build it?

During my early Sunday morning cartoon watching I discovered one of my favorite comedian’s dirty secret. The highly intellectual comic Greg Proops is now Bob the Builder. The brilliant member of the original British series “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” and the decent American version now voices a squat little hard hat wearing, know it all construction worker. I really don’t have a problem with this as everyone has to pay bills and Bob is an established force on the children’s circuit and you never know how it's all going to pay off either. As freshman in high school (@ 1986), my friend and I would visit this local bar located in a desolate shopping center called Fubars in Pleasant Hill to watch local comics pass through. Before the boom of Punchline comedy clubs throughout the Bay Area, most comics played at local out the way places when not in the mecca of comedy, the city of SF. I remember seeing Dana Gould (now ex. producer of the Simpsons), Larry “bubbles” Brown, one half of the t...

Dragon Boat Festival - SF

Image
Was planning on posting about this after I got back, but noticed an article went up on sfgate.com today about the San Francisco Dragon Boat Festival this weekend. These hard core boat races are moving from Lake Merced to Clipper Cove on Treasure Island due to growth of this event. Read the article . Treasure Island, if you don't already know is a man made island, which has been used for the 1939–40 World’s Fair and as a military base which closed in the 80s and is now a public part of the City of San Francisco. Clipper Cove is named after the landing spot/base for Pan Am's "China Clipper" route and a couple hangers still exist in this area. You can see them next to the marina area in this amazing 360 degree QTR from the entrance of Treasure Island here. Quick little history of Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island and The Bay Bridge that tunnels through it, can be found here. More pics: Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival @ July

This is why I miss the Bay Area

"What residents know for sure is that the San Francisco Bay Area has three seasons: winter, summer and fog." from sfgate.com I'm going up to the Bay the next two weekends! hella sweet.

Friday, F***k Yeah!

Image
This whole company gets so lazy here on Fridays and I'm not immune to it. Spent the whole day creating playlists in iTunes, scouring the mp3 blogs, doing nothing. One Friday we did shots of vodka which took a little more effort than just laziness. Paydays are the worst of the worst work ways (said Elmer) since my company doesn't offer direct deposit. After coming down from wired from coffee morning productive, I'll go to lunch, come back for a couple hours, and when the paycheck is hand delivered to me, off to the bank on the company's dime. I think why my company isn't able to offer direct deposit has something to do with the owner being an idiot and laundering money for the Los Angeles arm of the Irish mob in-between the sister companies and partnerships, but don't quote me on that. Until a couple weeks ago I actually stood in line OG style with heavy sighs, crossed arms, doing a crippled co-worker a favor. This one teller, a tad young for my taste, flirts wit...

Crushes

Back in the early 90s, I had this major crush on a fellow co-worker. I was 20 and she was about 23 having moved to the Bay Area recently from Boston. So we flirted for weeks and slowly became friends while working shifts together. Then one day I had this strange dream where the both of us were being mugged while hanging out in Berkeley. So vivid, but knowing it was dream I wondered if I had a rough vision of something bad happening to her that same night. I couldn't shake the feeling and decided to drive down to work to see if she was okay. My concern for her flattered her enough to make out with me for hours at the next co-worker party. Afterwards we made tentative plans for another night and life was swell. Two days later she stopped talking to me and quit. Quit! This started my famous "I'm Fucked Week", short for I just got fucked over. I had no idea what was going through her head and wasn't getting any reasons from her or our mutual friends as to why she wa...
