October Joys

Image
Hey you're back in town. So I've might have mentioned that October is the best month ever. This year has shaped out alright in my book. A list in no particular order: 1) My new job rocks. With each paycheck I receive a $20 gas card. Twice a week: free lunch. 2) Jessica Dobson (with Beck) on David Letterman!!  3) Ok this is about work again. Since I now interact with the purchasing department I often deal with vendor sale reps that come into work. Today I finally meet the one who part times in the world of porn (really). Mid to late 30s, 6 foot something with a grip of giant hands that frankly intimidated me. Everything screamed giant penis. As he stood up from the chair I swear that I and everything on the desk would be force pushed like droids blocking the path of Obi Wan. He'd be perfect for the porn version of The Office (there has to be one by now). 4) The Happy Hollows are releasing the great EP Imaginary today. Someone wrote that it was experimenta...
At the not so secret Beck show down the block from me at the Echo: Oh that would be Jessica Dobson of Deep Sea Diver playing the guitar. So, so happy for her when I heard about this last month. Beck has a reputation for working with great musicians in his band and she's crazy talented. Sadly I didn't hear about the show until a hour after the fact of course. yay go me. I like when I make the right choice

I decided that I would make the 45 minute drive down to Costa Mesa for the seconds to last Deep Sea Diver 's residency at the Detroit Bar since MFR is coming next week and I simply did not want to wait until May for my next j-do fix. Let me tell you (Corey esp) that you seriously missed out on a great show last night. Met friend and Southern OC local Ms. Johnny Pumpkin just in time to catch The Slings , a multi instrumental three piece that impressed me with their multitasking performance. Sometimes there was dual drumming, or dual xylophone whilst drumming and (my favorite) a saw and violin bow were mixed into this creature of heartfelt indie sounds. JP was a big fan of the melodica they were using enough so to ask what that keyboard harmonica thingy was called. I'd always called them a hooter as in that one hit wonder 80's band which Ms JP smarty pants was surprisingly unaware of. What? You don't remember the hooters ? Deep Sea Diver came on stage, played a song or...

Deep Sea Diver

Jessica Dobson announces the new band name of Deep Sea Diver. Though I consider myself a late comer in discovering Jessica Dobson's music, I guess I've been around long enough to see her mature in style and gain real notice in the area. My first encounter with her music was back in 2003 while researching the old Hub coffee shop show listings [I owe a big thank you for my favorite redhead for this and for oh so many reasons] in Fullerton around the same time I started to explore the local music scene after living a different life away from music and shows for almost 8 years. In that period I think attended only two concerts: Weezer (pinkerton) and Green Day only because the we had won tickets. This lack of music, a continued struggle to reclaim my Bay Area identity, and maybe more importantly, a soured relationship had made me incredibly unhappy during this part of my life. continue reading So here I was with one old and one new friend exploring the local OC and LA scene an...

Jessica Dobson 1.23.07

[So here is my post based purely on memories and assumptions - rough draft ] This has been driving me nuts: Two weeks later and I still haven't figured out a song she covered at this Prospector show. If I was a proper blogger I would've taken a note pad, a writing utensil, and a camera. But I'm lazy and this isn't really a music review blog. So lacking these basic reviewing tools I did what any professional would do: Ordered a beer and pushed my way up for a better view of Jessica Dobson and her new backing band. I remember her starting with song I think was called Dixie Driver , then next to a reworked version of Tsunamo Japan Is Snowed In which stood out in a solo set a year ago on this same stage. For that show she covered a Smiths song on her guitar (I want to say it was Shyness is Nice Ask - damn I should have written that down) and this night she switched over to bass for what I think might or might not have been a Clash song.* I'm unsure how recent the mu...

Photo by Jessica Oyanagi There is a wonderful article about Jessica Dobson in the OC Weekly that just went up today. Check it out here . When I first heard her original girl+guitar demos I knew this was an artist to keep an eye on. Within a year or so, when I finally saw her perform a mostly solo set, I was blown away. The next week I saw her with a backing band and walked away even more amazed. 'Wow,wow and wow' I wrote back then (12/2004). She is really that good. random upcoming show listing after the jump Tonight @ Kiss or Kill @ Safari Sams The Randies are back tonight after playing the Southwest leg of the Warped Tour just long enough for this show then back on the road again. raw and emotional

Image
My friend Ashley summed up last night perfectly: "I enjoyed the show because I forgot we were at a show. I forgot there was a stage, and lights, a bar, and people all around. I forgot *I* was there. I liked the show because she played open that which most try their whole lives to bury deep enough even they forget it's there. I think I like her music, but that SHOW was fantastic and had a thinly veiled rawness that I found tantalizing. It was everything that makes you feel alive." We were at the Silverlake Lounge last night to see the amazing Jessica Dobson and everything seemed alright as she set up whenever I glanced away from the conversation with my friends. She started with “Damaged Goods” then talked about the origin for the song “Panic Stricken” abouth the same time I moved off the high bench to move in closer, taking position in the back of the crowd. With a better view I began to wonder if she might be coming down with something since she looked a little scatte...

I love this song Most Sundays by Jessica Dobson. I have for a long time, but I thought I would mention it again. One of these days her album will be finished and playing in my car over and over again. More songs/demos can be streamed at her old "margo lee" site here *site is dead* - use her new band Deep Sea Diver )

Margo Lee and the Kung Fu Hustle

Last minute plans to see Margo Lee (= Jessica Dobson = Deep Sea Diver )at the Key Club worked out to my favor: It gave me enough time to drive home (1.5 hrs), do laundry, take a power nap (2 hrs) get ready and make it out to her 11.30 set time. Brief detour looking for an open coffee shop at 10.45 pm to keep Cortney awake. We settled for some from the Jack in the Box across the street from Amoeba Records and were entertained/freaked out by a crazed/drug-tripping lady splashing a whole cup of water on her face while bitching on a cell phone. Ah Hollywood. Margo Lee was playing an after party for the Fall Out Boy (part of the Fueled by Ramen and Friends tour) show at the House of Blues that night. I've never heard of any of these bands (Q: have you?) and wasn't blown over by what I've heard online either. So out of touch with MTV, oh well. When we got there, I think the Juliana Theory (I've heard of them) were finishing up on the main stage while we made our way into ...

smiles

Great music / shows make me smile Running a little late, but made it to see Margo Lee (= Jessica Dobson = Deep Sea Diver ) last night playing with a full band. Twice as packed than last week and wow. wow. oh, and wow. Smiled all the way home until I went to bed. Locally, only Midway and couple other bands have put on shows that cool. Each extremely different from each other, but I left all with smiles. listening to: Magneta Lane - Constant Lover album
