Kiss or Kill - Words are not easy to come by these days

Image
I've been holding back completely or at best the first few lines make it into words but are forgotten by the time I sit in front of my laptop. This has been going on for weeks now. Words were spoken to me the other night. These are words that have a strong meaning to me - these words won't matter to most of you non-kiss or kill folks and I wouldn't normally mention anything before it's all announced if I wasn't given permission to that night. So I was told that Kiss or Kill , the weekly music night I've been attending since late 2003 is coming to an end in Late December. After the big Halloween Bash (more details to follow) the last two months will be dedicated to the bands and fans that made up the core group over the last few years. Expect to see old faces, past and current favorites, and I hear maybe some surprises. It will be a celebration of the last five years if you will. It's hard to explain what I and others found at these shows and how so much has ...

Kiss or Kill 2007

Image
[I hope this year is better: Cooper is booking again = good thing] The first Kiss or Kill of 2007 will be starting on their new night (Wednesday) at the same old location Safari Sam's. Also new is the kissorkillclub blog . What is the same is the website and myspace . I would normally say look for this sign on Sunset Blvd. this Wednesday: But it looked liked this yesterday (burnt): Anyway the line up is as follows: The Automatic Music Explosion 9:30-10:00, The New Fidelity 10:15-10:45, Silver Needle 11:00-11:30, Underwater City People 11:45-12:15, Midway 12:30 no midway :( KorK is still booking the first three acts before Metal Skool on the first Monday on every month . Feb 5ths show (get in free info the kork site) line up is: Steel 9 pm, The Letter Openers 10 pm, Porterville 11pm, and then (who cares) Metal Skool at midnight. Porterville is so frigging fun live but what will the not so broad minded rock fans (not all rock fans are like this of course) think of this...

A few hours on Friday

Image
When did I become so busy? Just last week I trudged home every night in traffic just to eat soup and sit on the couch to watch americas greatest inventor or americas top model or americas wife swap which sounds dirty but isn't. I guess america's glory hole (wiki) is just around the corner, but sadly it would be actually about installing new flagpoles or something. Friday I wrote about my flat which forced me to buy a new one then the new one went flat on me only four hours later right before leaving for Kiss or Kill. I threw on the spare and went out on St Patrick ’s Day anyhow because I really needed a drink at that point. Arrived at Little Pedros safely and found Kiss or Kill pretty mellow with zero green beer or the craziness that one would expect at every bar that night. The only thing worth noting, besides certain people not showing up that I wanted to hang out with, was the last band Overnight Lows . Very tight, singer reminded me of a tall Debbie Harry, had a little Gw...

This week was alright

Image
I haven't written about the shows I've gone to lately, but the last couple nights have been memorable for different reasons. Tuesday was the last Kiss or Kill of the year with a prom night theme, meaning cute dresses, wacky suits, and great prom pictures. These are of Jason Pancake with the Randies , Tara & Emma of The Makeout Bandits , Laurita Randie, Kelly from the Dollyrots , and then Sean+Julia with Omega and CeCe of So Unloved and just a cute one of them together (they run the Punk Rock Social-live ). Some random things from that night that I might have done or seen: Seeing pretty much every girl that I've had a crush or infatuation over the last two years all in one room. Oh my god, didn't DG looked great that night? Lost a staring contest I initiated. Tried talking to a social friend with a hug/hello, how are you and then she was done dealing with me. I looked at her, she looked back and then looked away to scan the room. I stood there for a coupl...

Kiss or Kill @ El Cid 11.22.05

Let’s just start with my head hurts and that my car was behind police tape until 4.15 AM. In reverse: Sunset Blvd took another life from its outstretched lanes this warm November night. I wonder who it was that left El Cid in the one o'clock hour, making a u-turn from her parking space into a passing motorcycle or so I was told. A handful of friends and strangers had parked within the taped off zone and wondered how much of an extension this night was given. What could we do but watch and bitch and moan about getting home, our next day flights to hometowns and drives up the Interstate Five. Only distractions were doughnut jokes and spying on friends hooking up in the parking lot below the bridge over Myra. Corey and I walked a good friend to her faraway car, early I'd bit the neck of another, kisses on cheeks of girls in bands, waving an invisible goodbye to DG as she drove off. I made a point to drink heavily (for me) with Newcastles and a couple squirts from the tequila gun f...

Felt just like last time

Strange to walk into a room I haven't been in for a month. Celeste was working the door when I paid and received a friendly big hug, and who wouldn’ t want to be greeted like that? Better than walking into a Cheers setting where everyone knows your name, then talks smack behind your back. Lets be realistic, I do n’t like everybody sometimes and the feeling is mutual I’d im agine, so give me a few honest friends over being fake loved by all. The first person I see is DG sta nd ing by the column with a friend or a date or something. Thought she looked younger for some reason, even doubting it was her for a little while. Ah it was very much her. Next person to walk by was Honey Pot; made eye contact and then later a brief hello - all very much a non-issue and that’s okay with me. Out for only two social occasions in the last four weeks, I’m forg et ting that I need to engage people instead of hanging back along the walls observing strangers slip between blots of friends and couples ...

El lack of sleeping after El Cid

Image
Tossed and turned and managed a couple bouts of sleep of no more than 45 minutes at a time. Maybe it was the late night eating to help drive the 30 miles home, tank heading towards empty, or that I'm still sick and should've been sleeping and not drinking. Oh well I had fun. If I'd slept, I would've missed that moment when the words "swoon, swoon, swoon" filled my head. It was one of my random "last night was weird" moments of seeing someone again. Stronger impressions of offering my last piece of warm gum to a really cool person I'm just starting to get to know. I'll remember that So Unloved sounded amazing. Easily the best show that I've seen of theirs so far. I had never been to El Cid before and was pleasantly surprised by the layout of the building. Walking down sets of stairs that switched back and forth until reaching the courtyard with built in booths and an upper terrace on the far end. Now intrigued to see it in the daylight. Am...
